Dealing with the boringness of grinding:

There’s no way to get rid of it. There’s ways to deal with it, fortunately. The basic ways are to simply play music while grinding, or position your TV to a location where you don’t have to turn much to watch it, or chatting in game. Grinding doesn’t require you to watch your screen 100% of the time, even on a PVP server, so watching TV isn’t too hard. A method I personally like is talking to friends, RL or on team speak, both are good choices to help you forget about what you’re doing. One thing I urge everyone NOT to think about is how long it’s taking to level, it’ll make you extremely bored/frustrated.

Why do people grind if it’s so boring?

A simple, yet complicated question. The simple answer is that we’re power gamers/PVPers. We want to get as strong as possible as fast as possible. The part where it gets complicated is where casual gamers and such are reverting to grinding, too. With the current state of WoW, there’s very little reason to do quests. One of the only reasons is that you get more involved with the story/history of WoW. Another is that it is more entertaining than grinding. While I’m not going to try arguing with either of those, I will tell you the following:

There’s very few rewards to doing quests, one of them being able to buy mounts from other races in your faction. This, funny enough, isn’t very possible. The other being you get discounts. I’ll let you know now that you can easily obtain an honorable status by questing from 1 to 14-15, which is what I did. Grinding rewards better than questing, more materials, more gold, more of a chance to receive rare drops (blues that bind on equip), and most importantly, faster/better exp. Also, you can grind to 60 and then proceed to do instances, which means you end up with the same gear as everyone else, but faster.

There are different types of power leveling.

Grinding – Single target grinding, which is what this guide is based on. Some quests are done, but only the ones that can be done while grinding. This is -the- most boring form of power leveling.

AOEing – Killing multiple monsters at the same time with AOE spells. Sounds better than it is. Some quests are done, but only the ones that can be done while grinding. More entertaining than normal grinding.

Power AOEing – AOE grinding with outside support. This outside support is usually a support class healing you, which enables you to AOE a larger number of monsters and not have to worry about your health or survivability. Survivability is why solo AOE grinding is flawed. Little quests are done. Probably the best form of leveling. Fastest and most entertaining (you have someone to talk to, joke around, etc). The only downsides are finding someone to preform this task for you. Note: Outside support means you’re not partied, IE; you’re getting all of the experience.

Well, which is that fastest?! Power AOEing -> Grinding -> AOEing

How long did it take you to max, using these methods?

7 days to 10 days.

#10 andreas.kraus on 08.18.06 at 2:25 pm

Yea, Blizzard nerfed many of the AOE spots, but the upper list should still be quite accurate regarding to grinding spots.

Would love to hear your feedback! 🙂

#27 Aksal on 09.06.06 at 3:18 pm

i would ilke a awnser plz

#28 Chochise on 09.07.06 at 1:21 pm

I have a 54 warrior and am currently leveling a 26 druid. I beleive a druid will level faster as there is less down time and higher survivability rate (self heal and run away in cat form). Also the cat form travel talents provide a 30% boost in traveling. Faster travel = more productive grinding/questing. Remember in grinding you want to fight mobs 1 to 3 levels less than you. I found the druid had no problem handling multiple mobs at those levels.

#29 Aksal on 09.07.06 at 5:00 pm

i have no probs with grineding i an lvl 32 now and i lvl in stv eays i can take 3 lvl 36 at once itsjust aoeing on like 10 mobs atonce i just need a bit on help with that

#30 frostay on 09.10.06 at 4:11 pm

ok i am kinda like really good aoeing ( dont men to brag) been doing since 24 i no every good spot in the game for aoeing until 55 so if ur 30 good spot wud be on tauren in 1k and when 33 move up to arathi hihglands on dybries farmstead i dd 33-38 there very quickly….. and i f i was u ide go frost and fie … right now my build is 21 frost and rest in fire the only things to aoei have needed are imp blizzarding ice block preme forst imp frost nova if u want the build ill give u some ( this is just rough) so basically i aggro about 10 mobs and if i have ice block use if not go on a aggro of 5 mobs…. now what u do if frost nova and run away until u hav to be maxuim range for blizzard( u will get to no after a lil while) and cast blizzard the furthese edge from ur self at the feet of the closest mobs to u and when done do the same …. the mobs are near u no and no ur nova shud be up if needed frost nova and another blizzard and they ded …. if still alive arcane explosion ftw remember only ever use 3 blizzard 4 is a waste of mana and dowtime…. i have been doing since level 24 wrks good for me have cacthed up to mate who now 57 and im 55^^ imba lvelling so if u need any more help i will do my best to explain post and again and tell me how i went plz

#31 Aksal on 09.10.06 at 4:24 pm

ty i am gona try this out

were are the tauren in 1k

and r u horde
or allience

#32 frostay on 09.16.06 at 12:17 am

i am horde UD mage the taurens are on top of the dark cloud pinacle on the big mountains mainly aoe about 4 at that level and go for the melee ones… when ur 35 or so then start taking on 10 mobs in arathi….btw i find that the taures ar really annoying cos of casting so either counter spell or take priest with u cus the exp will be half but u take one more mobs and less down time … basically do what ever until 33 …thts when the real aoe comes in of about 10 mobs….. i remember my bro made a mage he was 32 not 33 i went on his acc and took the whole FIELD!! of the mobs in arathi …so thats about 15 mobs the same level as him ofc i used one health potion and mana jade but it was good i taght him how to aoe aswell…. hope it all help tell me how it goes

now for me dude i am now 25 warr and i have fury build i heard duel wiedl was good so i got winged blade and bucther’s slicer from sfk this is good or go with 2h weapon called dense triangle mace? so in all whihc is better faster build of rage with duel wiedl with the fact of missing alot (which u
do) or have big 2h weapon slow and big damage? ( this is all with fury )

plz no one say 2h for arms and duel wield for fury i jst wanna no whihc is best for fury thanks guys

plz reply

#33 Aksal on 09.16.06 at 2:55 pm

#34 Crowface on 09.21.06 at 4:40 pm

Being a long time AoE’r, let me give u a few basics to live by.

1. Make 100% sure you spec to have improved blizzard. It is crucial to good mana efficiency, resulting in less downtime. It also prevents you from getting hit… ever.

2. Make sure to spec into frost, because later on down the line (40+) you are going to get ice barrier, the god of all AoE spells. It prevents you from being dazed, knocked off horse and dieing, the 3 main AoE pitfalls. GET IT!

3. Stay far, far away from ranged/caster mobs. If there is even 1 in a group, they will mess up your whole system. A lightning bolt/arrow/bullet in the chest and your blizzard is gone. That’s 700+ mana down the drain and you probobly dead from OOM(out of mana). MELEE ONLY!

4. Use wand to pull straying mobs. If they are spread out, use ur wand to aggro them, then while they run at you, run away from them to the other mobs to pull a bigger group. If you aoe correctly, you can take on an infinite amount of mobs.

This should be your AoE order every single time. Get the mobs together in whatever way you want, but make sure they are tightly packed together. Frost Nova them, SIDESTEP (don’t back up, you move slower, and you need to get to 30 yds before the Frost Nova breaks. Moving sideways lets you keep them in view and move at 100% speed.) Blizzard them so you are hitting them all. When your blizzard is just about out, cast it again somewhat near you so they walk into it and get hit as much as possible before they hit you. When they get close, frost nova, and backup and blizzard again. If you are too low on mana, instead of blizzard, try flamestrike and an Arcane Explosion, and wand them to death. Your Ice Barrier may be up again, allowing you to wand them without dieing. Try and save Evocation for when you run OOM and there are too many mobs with too much health. Use cold snap if you must, Frost Nova, run away and evocation to full mana. AE to death.

Enjoy!

Now Crowface has just left exactly what I needed, quick newbies guide to AOE technique. Gives the basic Idea which you can then tailor to suit your own particular style. I’m not having a great deal of luck with AOE grinding atm but then I’m only level 20 so I think thats still the main problem. Haven’t got that Blizzard to 60% slow yet so the mobs reach me before I can run off another blizzard and before the cooldown on my nova has expired. But top stuff, thanks Crowface and an equal if not larger thanks to Andreas for posting all the top info in the first place, Im going to use this as a guideline for all my chars from now on.

#36 Scratchthis on 09.24.06 at 3:28 am

Hey great guide, I’m a feral druid should i grind single units or multiple units? (Im lvl 25) and what lvl units should they be and where?

#39 Aksal on 10.24.06 at 4:36 pm

AN Y 1 HERE GOT FULL EPIC OR IS THIS A DEAD FORUM NOW ?

#40 lITTLEsHOCK on 02.01.07 at 2:34 pm

How should a warlock grind? The only AOE spell we have is hellfire, which hurts us and causes so much threat that it pulls all agro. The best way i have found is to DOT one and let the Void take care of him while I DOT another. This means a lot of boring grinding. Is there a better way??? Thanks

PS I am lvl 39 currently in STV doing the pages quest.

#41 frostay on 02.08.07 at 9:11 pm

yeh this is like 6 months later since i have posted i am now level 64 mage with my gear owning and i am also thinking of making a lock they own with dots so i thought any like special method for grinding with locks?

#42 Galorah on 04.24.07 at 9:44 pm

I am trying the 15-20 Harpy spot in Barrens right now, it works GREAT! Thanks so much.

#43 Cynis on 05.04.07 at 7:15 pm

yeah aoe grinding is great…for 29-34 i liked the yeti cave in hillsbrad…there all melee so you dont have to deal with casters getting out of the group and you cant aoe everything at once and they dont run…
me and my priest friend both lvl 31 (i’m a pally) took out 22 yeti’s out once resulting in 3,200 XP in about 1 minute. if we were rested about 6.5k xp 🙂

#44 Tros on 08.09.07 at 8:45 am

Mud Gnolls blow, just FYI. Casters = no solo aoe
